artnet Auctions presents the American Art Sale, a selection of important 19th and 20th century works comprised of over 50 paintings, prints, drawings, and sculptures by American artists, such as Thomas Hart Benton, Alexander Calder, John Marin (18701953), Elie Nadelman (18851946), Allen Tucker (18661939), and Grant Wood (18911942).
Featured in the sale is Europa (study) (c.1941), an oil and tempera on Masonite by Benton, estimated from US$ 100,000 to US$ 125,000. This surrealistic study of a reclining nudereminiscent of the masters infamous 1938 work, Persephone, now in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, MOemploys a symbolism and dark tone that is rarely seen in Bentons work. The study is thought to have been produced around the same time as the Year of Peril seriesBentons controversial reaction to the attack on Pearl Harborcurrently on view at the State Historical Society of Missouri.
Another key work in the auction is the dynamic, kinetic stabile, Untitled (c.1943), by Modern Abstract master Calder, estimated from US$ 250,000 to US$ 350,000. The tabletop sculpture comes from Galerie Louis Carr
