Livability.com, a national website that highlights more than 500 of Americas best places to live and visit, has released a list of the Top 10 College Towns for 2012.
The list is the third installment of an annual listing of Americas best college towns and includes communities where the identity of the city is both shaped by and complementary to the presence of its university, creating an environment enjoyable to all residents, whether they are enrolled in classes or not.
College towns are great places to live for people interested in arts, cultural activities, and other quality of life amenities, says John Hood, spokesperson for Livability.com. Our annual Best College Towns list shows how continuing education opportunities, workforce training (and its impact on local economic development), great medical facilities make these college towns some of the best places to live in America.
To narrow down this years list, editors consulted with Robert Franek, senior vice president, publisher and author of Princeton Review’s recently released 21st edition Best Colleges guidebook. Editors used the Best Colleges ranking as a starting point in identifying top-ranked universities within Livability.com’s list of Best Places to Live. They then considered whether the university is a major economic player in the town, as well as the towns cost of living, things to do, crime rates and walkability.
The result is a list of 10 great towns where the college and city are inextricably linked to make it a great place to live, whether in a dorm or permanent home.
